DIE WORTE WERDEN

Die Worte werden teils mit Beifall, teils mit mehr oder weniger leisem Widerspruch aufgenommen.
The words are met partly with applause, partly with more or less quiet dissent.

For the Exhibition: Eine äußerst subjektive Version der Geschichte
Karø  Goldt and Irina Novarese
Galerie Bernau, Bernau bei Berlin (DE)

Who tells the story? The exhibition A highly subjective version of the story explores individual perspectives on our surroundings and our experiences. Memories are personal connections to the past. Luminous words and fragments of sentences reveal alternative viewpoints, with the city of Bernau acting as both a source and an inspiration. What do the people here remember? What do they and we see in their city?
Karø Goldt and Irina Novarese have set out in search of turning points and present their discoveries through site-specific installations: a narrative cartography of Bernau in which the direction of reading and interpretation can be chosen entirely by the audience.

„The words are received partly with applause, partly with more or less quiet dissent.“ On the floor, we read this slightly altered quote from a book about the history of Bernau’s former ADGB Trade Union School. Irina Novarese, too, was inspired by the city – and language and words are central to her work. She began by catching snippets of conversations and words from posters in Bernau’s public spaces, letting herself be guided through the city by „encounters“ and her own awareness. In libraries, the city archives, travel guides, novels, and videos, she researched Bernau’s modern history, focusing on periods of upheaval. For example, the transition of the newspaper NEUER TAG to the Märkische Oderzeitung after German reunification in 1990 represents a turning point in both the written word and the everyday lives of newspaper readers.
From all these texts and concepts, Novarese composed a narrative cartography of the city. This work is now presented as an installation in the exhibition, allowing the public to freely choose their own reading direction, develop their own associations from the fragments, and ultimately create an individual narrative.
