Fragmenting obsolescence is a curatorial project that includes several exhibitions of BIENALSUR 2025. It explores works and artists that propose possible fissures to the modern notion of technological progress, enables new ways of observing matter and time, things and their durability, with the challenge of fragmenting the currently imposed future.
La rebelión de la basura is based on a homonymous chronicle by Rosario writer Héctor Sebastianelli published in 1988 together with a set of engravings by local artists. The episode narrated took place in Rosario in the seventies, due to a riot of “cirujas” in front of the city hall, as a consequence of a conflict over the garbage collection. This rebellion, which ended in a vindication on the part of those who humbly collect what others throw away, is a starting point to put what we usually call garbage in the place of actors. The most common fate for what has abandoned its usefulness is to place it in the symbolic sediment of waste.
In response to this, we revitalize these invisible materialities between fast consumption and the attraction of the new, to transform them into particularly significant matters of contemporary productions. This assumes a critical and political reflection not only on the ecology of things but also on the survival of materials. In this way, abandoned materials are recovered as a questioning of the structures that define the obsolete.
